Attribution is a model of influence, not a perfect reconstruction of why someone bought.

Customers cross channels, devices and time. Attribution models assign credit using rules, so different models can tell different stories about the same journey.

Customers cross channels, devices and time. Attribution models assign credit using rules, so different models can tell different stories about the same journey.

First-touch attribution

First-touch gives credit to the earliest recorded acquisition source. It is useful for asking which channels introduce people, but it can understate the channels and interactions that later helped the person decide.

Last-touch attribution

Last-touch gives credit to the final recorded source before conversion. It is straightforward for operational reporting but often overvalues branded search, direct visits, retargeting or other channels that appear late in the journey.

Multi-touch approaches

Linear, position-based, time-decay and data-driven approaches distribute credit across several interactions using different rules. They can add nuance, but more complex math does not eliminate missing data or prove causality.

The identity problem

A person may browse anonymously, return on another device, click a newsletter, ask a colleague, then type the brand name directly. Unless those interactions are legitimately connected, the analytics system sees an incomplete story.

Use attribution with incrementality thinking

Ask not only which source received credit, but what would likely have happened without the channel or campaign. Controlled experiments, geographic tests and holdouts can sometimes answer causal questions better than path-based attribution, though they require appropriate scale and design.

Choose the model for the question

  • Use first-touch to study acquisition discovery.
  • Use last-touch for a simple view of the final recorded conversion source.
  • Use multi-touch for journey analysis when the data quality supports it.
  • Use experiments when you need stronger evidence about causal lift.
  • Compare models rather than treating one dashboard as objective truth.

Frequently asked questions

Which attribution model is best?

No model is best for every question. Choose based on the decision you need to make and the quality of the available data.

Is last-click attribution wrong?

Not inherently. It answers a narrow question about the final recorded interaction, but it should not be mistaken for the entire customer journey.

Does multi-touch attribution prove causation?

No. Assigning credit across touches does not by itself prove that each touch caused the conversion.
